Mussel powder and derivatives

The Western European market provides different qualities of mussel powder. It is not always clear which components these mussel powders consists of.

E.F.S. mussel powder

E.F.S. mussel powder is 100% pure mussel meat from the green lipped mussel (Perna Canaliculus). The mussel is specially farmed in the pristine waters of New Zealand and therefore free of unwanted bacteria, toxins and heavy metals at source.

The green lipped mussel is farmed to make products that are especially used to relieve pain symptoms caused by osteoarthritis and other similar conditions. Green lipped mussel products are available as oil as well as powder for both the food and the pet food market.

E.F.S. mussel powder is made of whole mussels without the shells. Our supplier farms and harvests its own mussels in the waters of Marlborough Sounds according to EU/USA directives. The mussels are then processed in the supplier’s own factory. The freshly harvested mussels are steam heated in order to open them. Then the mussel meat is removed from the shell. The meat is dried during a special freeze drying process, retaining omega-3 fatty acids, fats and glycosaminoglycans in a highly concentrated powder form. This powder is ground into a free-flowing powder.

Types of mussel powder

Various sources of mussel powder are available on the Western European market:

• pure 100% mussel powder only containing mussel meat
• defatted mussel powder: mussel powder from mussel meat from which the oil (with a high omega-3 and glycolic amide content) is extracted for human consumption.
• mussel powder consisting of the whole mussel, including its shell, in a ground and dried form.

The price and quality of defatted mussel powder is lower compared with pure mussel powder.

E.F.S. only sells pure mussel powder into which the whole mussel is processed, creating a powder that contains a high level of health promoting substances. Combined with a natural chondroitin source mussel powder can be used to relieve arthritis.

Effects E.F.S. green lipped mussel powder

E.F.S. pure mussel powder is a natural glucosamine(sulphate) source. Glucosamine is a cartilage building block and can be used to prevent and treat joint wear and tear (osteoarthritis). Glucosamine supplementation inhibits (inflammation-induced) cartilage degradation. It is also important for the quality of other connective tissues in the body such as skin, blood vessels and mucous membranes.

Chondroitin and glucosamine combined

In addition to the above glucosamine source, E.F.S. also supplies a natural chondroitin sulphate source. Chondroitin sulphate also relieves arthrosis and osteoarthritis symptoms and has a positive impact on joints due to its anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effects. E.F.S. strongly believes that the use of both chondroitin and glucosamine maximises the effect.
